Screening for STDs as early as possible during a pregnancy is critical, as serious pregnancy complications can occur that put your health and the health of your baby at risk.
Sexually transmitted diseases are common infections that spread from person to person during sexual activity, blood transmission, or genital contact. Since many STDs do not have symptoms, you may not be aware that you have an infection. The only way to confirm an STD is to get tested. This panel tests for chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, and 2 human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV-1 and HIV-2).

HIV is the viral infection caused by 1 of 2 retroviruses, HIV-1 or HIV-2.
Retroviruses encode their genetic material using ribonucleic acid (RNA) rather than deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). When HIV infects a cell, it utilizes the host cell's ability to convert viral RNA to DNA in order to multiply and spread. The newly replicated HIV then leaves the host cell to infect other cells.
HIV-1 is the most common and most virulent form of the virus and is responsible for the majority of AIDS infections worldwide. HIV-2 is less common and while it can still lead to AIDS, it typically progresses more slowly than HIV-1. In terms of treatment, there are antiretroviral drugs that can be used to treat both types of HIV, but there is currently no cure for HIV.
