Benzodiazepines are a class of controlled psychoactive depressants prescribed to treat severe anxiety, seizures, and sleep disorders, but are often overused for their calming effect. They are illegally sold on the street as benzos and downers, are highly addictive, and have a high rate of overdose.

Marijuana is a psychoactive drug produced from the Cannabis sativa plant that contains the cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It’s highly addictive and can cause permanent changes in the brain, particularly in younger people.

Cocaine is a highly addictive stimulant derived from the leaves of the South American coca plant. Benzoylecgonine is the primary breakdown product created by the body after cocaine consumption, which stays in the body longer than cocaine itself. Recreational cocaine use in the form of white crystal powder or crystalline rocks (crack) is illegal.

Opiates are a class of drugs used to treat pain (analgesic agents) derived naturally from the opium poppy plant. They include prescription-only pain medications used to treat moderate to severe pain, such as opium, codeine, and morphine. However, opiates are highly addictive, commonly leading to substance abuse.

Synthetic and semi-synthetic opioids include prescription methadone, hydroquinone, fentanyl, and heroin, which is the leading cause of substance abuse deaths. Results will indicate positive or negative for opiates, not specifying which opiate caused the test result, with the exception of oxycodone (see below).

Oxycodone is a semi-synthetic narcotic (opioid) analgesic that alters how the brain and nervous system perceive and respond to pain. This medication is legally prescribed in a single tablet combination with acetaminophen marketed as Percocet and as an extended-release tablet marketed as OxyContin. They are used to treat moderate to severe pain in individuals needing pain relief who are unsuccessful in achieving adequate response with other medications.

Oxycodone is one of the most commonly abused medications in the United States. Many individuals begin by taking the prescribed dose, but as their bodies develop tolerance, they require a higher dosage to retain the same pain relief. The use of oxycodone can lead to dependence in as little as 5 days, and oxycodone-containing medications that also contain acetaminophen such as Percocet, can cause severe liver damage over time. Oxycodone has a high rate of overdose and death.
