Preparation: If you are having menstrual cycles, it is best to have your sample collected on cycle day 2, 3 or 4 (cycle day 1 is the first day of your period). If you are not having menstrual cycles, the test can be performed at your convenience.

This test panel measures hormone levels in your blood that are commonly evaluated by healthcare providers to assess ovulatory egg supply, ovulatory function, and reproductive health. It includes personalized age-based scores, designed to help summarize ovarian reserve in context, that were developed using data from fertility centers and egg retrieval results following controlled ovarian hyperstimulation.

Anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) is a hormone produced by the cells in an ovary's follicles. Follicles are tiny fluid-filled sacs inside the ovary that contain and release eggs. AMH provides insight into a woman's ovarian reserve—or the number of eggs she has remaining. The level of AMH in a woman's body can provide valuable information about her reproductive health.
Your results will indicate whether your levels fall within the normal range for women your age or if they are lower than expected. Our AMH test gives you a snapshot of your AMH level at the time of testing. Hormone therapy or hormonal birth control can lower a woman's AMH levels, causing the estimated egg supply to measure lower than it actually is. High levels of AMH can indicate how well someone may respond to fertility treatments in preparation for in vitro fertilization (IVF). Low levels could indicate an issue with ovarian reserve, which could mean that you have fewer eggs available for fertilization or that you may be at an increased risk for certain medical conditions. High levels could also suggest polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), though only a healthcare provider can make a clinical diagnosis.

FSH is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates the ovaries to produce eggs, and it also controls the menstrual cycle. With aging, estrogen levels decrease and FSH levels increase. This test measures the level of FSH in your blood. High levels can indicate that you have begun the menopause transition.

Estradiol is the primary and most potent form of the hormone estrogen. Estrogen is first produced at puberty. Estradiol levels fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle during your reproductive years but begin to decline during the menopause transition. A low level of estradiol may indicate the start of the menopause transition or can indicate a problem where your hypothalamus causes menstrual cycles to stop, commonly due to excessive exercise, stress, or undereating (hypothalamic amenorrhea).

Luteinizing hormone is another sex hormone produced by the pituitary gland that helps to control the menstrual cycle and triggers ovulation. Levels outside of typical range may cause irregular periods. As estrogen levels decrease with aging, LH levels increase. High levels of LH may indicate the beginning of menopause or can indicate a problem where your hypothalamus causes menstrual cycles to stop, commonly due to excessive exercise, stress, or undereating (hypothalamic amenorrhea).

Inhibin B is a hormone produced by the cells in an ovary's follicles. Follicles are tiny fluid-filled sacs inside the ovary that contain and release eggs. Along with AMH, inhibin B provides insight into a woman's ovarian reserve—or the number of eggs she has remaining. A low level of inhibin B can indicate a decline in ovarian reserve.

The Egg Supply Score is a proprietary calculation that combines your hormone result values and your age to generate a score from 1 to 20. This score is used to compare your ovarian reserve to other women your age.

Low levels of AMH may indicate a reduced ovarian reserve.

Although higher AMH levels can indicate a higher egg supply, AMH levels may be higher in some women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This test does not evaluate for PCOS or other reproductive medical conditions.

How does my AMH level relate to fertility?

Although AMH levels correspond to your estimated egg count, they do not indicate whether you are fertile or infertile. It is just one piece of your overall reproductive health. Regardless of your AMH level, other factors could affect your ability to get pregnant (such as age, medical conditions, irregular ovulation, blocked fallopian tubes, uterine abnormalities, your partner’s sperm count, your partner’s sperm motility, and others).

As we age, the number of viable eggs slowly decreases, producing fewer egg-releasing follicles and as a result, less AMH. Low levels of AMH may indicate a low number of viable eggs, decreasing the potential for an egg becoming fertilized.

What can I do if I have low levels of AMH for my age and still want to have a baby?

Low levels of AMH could mean that your ovaries are preparing fewer follicles to release eggs. Several factors may contribute to fewer follicles, including age, chemotherapy, genetics, the environment, and smoking.

Even if your AMH is low for your age, you may be able to conceive. AMH levels indicate your ovaries are producing some of the follicles necessary for eggs to be released—and it only takes one egg to become pregnant.

Additionally, this test can help a doctor determine how likely fertility treatment will work. Together, you and your doctor can discuss your reproductive health and pregnancy planning.
