About the test

Hepatitis C (HCV) is a viral infection that affects the liver. It is spread mainly through direct blood-to-blood contact, most often from sharing needles or other equipment to inject drugs. Less common ways to contract HCV are from mother to child at birth and sexual contact.

It is not understood why, but some people can be infected with HCV and fight off the infection; while others will carry the virus for the rest of their lives, often without symptoms, until liver damage is advanced. More than half of those infected develop this long-term, chronic infection. Chronic hepatitis C can damage the liver over time and lead to cirrhosis (scarring), liver cancer, and serious complications.

Infection triggers the production of virus-specific antibodies to fight illness. This hepatitis C test first checks for HCV-specific IgG antibodies in your blood to determine whether you have been infected with HCV. A positive test result does not necessarily indicate you have an active HCV infection; it may also indicate a past infection. If this test is positive, Quest’s lab will conduct additional testing on your sample (a hepatitis C RNA test) to confirm active infection1. This confirmation test measures the level of HCV in the blood (viral load). The level of hepatitis C RNA can tell you if you have a current or past HCV infection. This information can help your healthcare provider interpret your results and, if you are undergoing treatment, monitor your response to that treatment. Unlike hepatitis B, there is no vaccine for hepatitis C but, according to the CDC, modern antiviral medicines can cure more than 95% of people with chronic HCV.

Included with your purchase, you have the ability to review your results with an independent healthcare provider.
