Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) Test

Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacteria Mycoplasma genitalium. Some people with Mgen may never experience symptoms, which makes it very easy to spread from person to person during sex.

Mgen can be treated with antibiotics; however, some infections are harder to treat due to the increasing rate of drug-resistant Mgen strains. This test does not provide information on which strain you are infected with if your results are positive.

If left untreated, Mgen may cause serious complications and can spread to reproductive organs. In women, it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. In pregnant women, Mgen may lead to premature labor and delivery. Long-term effects in men are not yet determined.

Many people do not experience symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they may vary from person to person.

Symptoms common in women include the following:

• Vaginal discharge
• Itching, burning, redness, or soreness of the genitals
• Discomfort during urination
• Pain during sexual intercourse
• Lower abdomen pain

Symptoms common in men include the following:

• Discharge from the penis
• Itching or irritation inside the penis
• Burning sensation during urination

These symptoms can be associated with other conditions. Regardless of your results, please discuss your symptoms with your doctor.

No special preparation is required.

Vaginal swab: During your scheduled appointment time, a Quest Patient Service Representative (PSR) will provide you with a vaginal collection kit that comes in a sealed, protective wrapper and includes a step-by-step collection instruction sheet. If you have questions prior to performing your self-collection, you may ask the PSR or call 1.833.700.2423. The concierge line is open Monday-Friday 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM ET. It is closed on weekends and holidays.

After you provide your specimen, it generally takes a few business days to process and release your test results. However, processing times may vary. Your test results will be available in a clear and easy-to-read report. If you have or create a MyQuest® account, you can review your new results there with your other Quest results.

If your results indicate possible infection, you will receive an alert call from an independent healthcare coordinator. Independent physicians are available to discuss questions or concerns you may have regarding your results. Given that some strains of this disease are resistant to certain antibiotics, it is important to share your results (especially if positive) with your doctor. Using this information, they can provide the best treatment options possible. This test does not provide information on which strain you are infected with if your results are positive.
