Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are common infections that spread from person to person during sexual activity and skin-to-skin contact. Many people with an STD never experience symptoms, especially in the early stages, yet they can still pass the infection to others. If left untreated, STDs can cause serious long-term health complications for yourself and others.

This comprehensive STD test panel screens for chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, trichomoniasis, syphilis, and HIV (HIV-1 and HIV-2). Consistent with CDC testing guidelines, if your HIV or syphilis test result is positive, the lab will perform an additional confirmatory test on your sample at no extra cost to you.

Screens for 7 sexually transmitted infections/diseases:

Chlamydia is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. According to the CDC², it is the most commonly reported STD in the United States. Most people with chlamydia do not have symptoms, which makes it easy to spread unknowingly to others. Testing is generally done with a urine sample (for men) or a vaginal swab (for women). Chlamydia is treatable with antibiotics, but it rarely goes away on its own. If left untreated, the infection can persist and cause serious complications. In men, it can spread to the testicles and epididymis (tubes that carry sperm), leading to pain & possible infertility. In women, it can infect the reproductive organs and cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ectopic pregnancy, and infertility.

Gonorrhea is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. According to the CDC², it is the second most commonly reported STD in the United States. Most women and some men with gonorrhea do not experience symptoms, which makes the infection easy to spread unknowingly to others. Testing is generally done with a urine sample (for men) or a vaginal swab (for women). Gonorrhea is treatable with antibiotics, but it rarely clears without treatment. If detected early, treatment is effective, and complications are uncommon. If left untreated, however, gonorrhea can persist and cause serious health problems. In men, it can spread to the epididymis (tubes that carry sperm), leading to pain and possible infertility. In women, it can spread to the reproductive organs and cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ectopic pregnancy, and infertility.

Syphilis is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum. According to the CDC⁴, it is a serious but treatable infection that often goes unnoticed because its symptoms can be mild, may come and go without treatment, or may be mistaken for something else. Syphilis is spread through direct contact with a sore (chancre), which can appear on the genitals, anus, rectum, lips, or mouth. Common signs may include sores, skin rashes, or mucous patches. Testing for syphilis is done with a sample of blood. Syphilis can be cured with antibiotics, most often penicillin. However, it is important to begin treatment as soon as possible because, while treatment can stop the infection, it may not reverse damage already done. If left untreated, syphilis can progress to later stages and cause serious health problems, including damage to the brain, eyes, heart, nerves, bones, joints, and liver. Syphilis can also be passed from an untreated mother to her baby during pregnancy, leading to congenital syphilis, which can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe lifelong health complications for the baby. Consistent with CDC testing guidelines, if your syphilis test result is positive, the lab will perform an additional confirmatory test on your sample at no extra cost to you.

HIV-1 and HIV-2 are types of human immunodeficiency virus, a sexually transmitted viral infection. HIV attacks the immune system, weakening the body’s defenses against infections and disease⁶. Without treatment, HIV can progress to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Many people with HIV have no symptoms for years, which makes it easy to spread through unprotected sex or other exposures. The virus can be transmitted through contact with infected blood, semen, vaginal fluids, rectal fluids, or breast milk. Testing for HIV is done with a blood sample. Consistent with CDC testing guidelines⁷, if your HIV test result is positive, the lab will perform an additional confirmatory test on your sample at no extra cost to you.

There are two types of HIV found in the United States: HIV-1, which is the most common, and HIV-2. This test checks for both types. There is no cure for HIV or AIDS, and the infection does not go away on its own. However, treatment with antiretroviral therapy (ART) can suppress the virus to undetectable levels. When HIV is undetectable, it cannot be transmitted sexually. Effective treatment also prevents progression to AIDS and protects the immune system from long-term damage. If left untreated, HIV can severely weaken the immune system, progress to AIDS, and lead to life-threatening infections and complications.

If you are looking to test after a specific potential HIV exposure, please note that no HIV test can detect it immediately after exposure. This test can usually detect HIV 18-45 days after exposure⁷, but if you get a negative result during this window, you should consider testing again after 45 days from the potential exposure.

Hepatitis B is an infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It spreads through contact with infected blood, semen, or other body fluids. This is most often during sexual contact, from mother to child at birth, or through sharing needles. According to the CDC⁹, about 90% of infants infected at birth, develop chronic hepatitis B, compared to about 5-10% of adults who were infected. For some people, hepatitis B is a short-term illness with symptoms such as flu-like feelings, joint pain, fatigue, nausea, or yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice). For others, the infection becomes chronic and can lead to serious liver damage, including cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) and liver cancer. There is no cure, but vaccination can prevent infection, and antiviral medications and lifestyle changes can help manage chronic hepatitis B. Testing for hepatitis B is done with a blood test. HBV antigens cause the body's immune system to react and make antibodies. Screening is performed with three tests recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention¹⁰ to help evaluate HBV infection and immune status. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg); which is a marker of HBV infection (acute or chronic) and infectiousness.

Hepatitis C is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV), which is spread through contact with infected blood. It is spread mainly through direct blood-to-blood contact, most often from sharing needles or other equipment to inject drugs¹¹. Less common ways to contract HCV are from mother to child at birth and sexual contact. For some people, hepatitis C is a short-term illness. However, more than half of those infected develop a long-term, chronic infection. Chronic hepatitis C can damage the liver over time and lead to cirrhosis (scarring), liver cancer, and serious complications. Recommended testing¹² for hepatitis C starts with an antibody test (anti-HCV) to check for antibodies that show if a person has ever been exposed to the virus.

A negative antibody result means the person has likely never been exposed.
A positive antibody result means exposure at some point but does not confirm current infection.

If antibodies are present, a follow-up HCV RNA (PCR) test is done on your sample to detect the virus itself. A positive RNA test confirms an active infection and will require medical evaluation and treatment. Unlike hepatitis B, there is no vaccine for hepatitis C but, according to the CDC, modern antiviral medicines can cure more than 95% of people with chronic HCV.

Trichomoniasis is a nonviral sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. Trichomoniasis is one of the most common curable STDs in the United States¹³. About 70% of people never develop symptoms, which makes it easy to spread unknowingly through sexual contact¹³. When symptoms do occur, they may include itching, burning, genital redness, unusual discharge, or discomfort during urination or sex. In women, trichomoniasis commonly infects the vulva, vagina, cervix, or urethra. In men, it typically infects the urethra. Testing is usually done with a vaginal swab (self- or provider-collected) or urine sample. Trichomoniasis can be cured with antibiotics. If untreated, the infection may remain in your body for months or even years without symptoms, and can be passed to sexual partners. Ongoing infection can cause inflammation of the genital tract, increase the risk of contracting or transmitting HIV, and may contribute to infertility in both men and women. In pregnant women, trichomoniasis has been linked to complications including premature birth and low birth weight.

This panel can be performed in people with and without symptoms of sexually transmitted infections. When symptoms do occur, they may vary from person-to-person and depend on the infection. Some of the most common symptoms include:

Burning with urination
Increased urinary frequency
Itching or irritation of the vagina or penis
Discharge from the vagina or penis

Pain during sexual intercourse
Unusual vaginal bleeding

How do I know if I have an STD? Can STDs be treated?

It is not always possible to know if you have an STI/STD because many people do not have symptoms. Here are some of the most common symptoms:

Burning with urination

Lower abdominal pain
Pain during sexual intercourse
Unusual vaginal bleeding

Treatment depends on the STD:

Bacterial infections (such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis) are generally curable with prescribed antibiotics. Treatment regimens vary depend on the infection and the CDC emphasizes that it is important to complete your full course of medication as antibiotic resistance is a growing concern¹⁵
Parasitic infections (such as trichomoniasis) are also generally curable with prescribed medications
Viral infections generally have more varied treatment options. HIV is not curable but can be managed with medication that can suppress the virus to undetectable levels, which may prevent progression of HIV to AIDS and reduce or prevent transmission. Hepatitis B & C may be managed with medications and/or lifestyle changes and recommendations

It is important to remember that, even during treatment, you may still be able to pass on STIs/STDs until your healthcare provider confirms the infection is cleared or suppressed. Always follow your doctor’s guidance on safe practices to protect yourself and others. Additionally, for many curable infections, reinfection is common if both partners are not treated simultaneously.

I’m pregnant. Can I pass an STD to my baby?

Yes, it is possible to pass an STD to your child at some point during your pregnancy or during delivery. This transmission is more common with some STDs than others. Many STDs can cause serious pregnancy complications, and the baby could develop health problems or be born early. If you are pregnant, it is important to get tested for STDs as soon as possible and, if you are positive, contact your OBGYN right away.

How do I protect myself from getting an STD?

The best way to protect yourself is to exercise safe sex practices, including wearing a condom and limiting the number of sexual partners that you have. Regular testing can help you detect STDs early, before they cause complications or spread further.

Read all instructions before starting to collect a sample. Failure to follow the instructions could affect the test results. If you have questions prior to performing your self-collection, you may ask the PSR or call 1.833.700.2423. The concierge line is open Monday-Friday 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM EST. It is closed on weekends and holidays.

If you accidentally drop the swab or collection tube (or contaminate them in any way), inform the PSR, who will dispose of them and provide new ones. If you are unable to self-collect, please contact your doctor. The collection cannot be done by the PSR.

Can I perform the vaginal swab self-collection if I am menstruating?

Yes, you can perform a vaginal swab self-collection while menstruating. Studies have indicated that it does not affect the test. If you are experiencing vaginal bleeding that is not related to menstruation, then it is not recommended that you perform this test.
