Antioxidants are substances that can prevent or slow damage to cells caused by oxidative stress. They interact with toxins called free radicals, to minimize their damage. Antioxidants can help counter oxidative stress, which can play a role in conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and more.5
They are closely related: ubiquinone is the oxidized form of CoQ10; ubiquinol is the reduced, active form; and ubisemiquinone is the half-reduced form. Your body switches back and forth between the three as CoQ10 does its work, and generally about 90-95% of CoQ10 exists in the reduced form in healthy individuals.6 This test measures your total CoQ10 and does not report any amounts separately.
Statins work to lower cholesterol but may interfere with the process that the body uses to make CoQ10. Researchers have spent years looking at whether statins lower your CoQ10 levels. So far, the findings are mixed, with the strongest evidence showing that supplementation may help relieve migraines, restore levels that have reduced due to age or statin use, and aid in supporting those experiencing heart failure.4
This test can show your current CoQ10 status, but it cannot tell you whether a statin is causing any symptoms you may have. Talk to your healthcare provider about any muscle symptoms or medication questions, and do not stop any prescribed medications without medical guidance.
Water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins differ in how they are absorbed by the human body. A water-soluble vitamin dissolves in water and is easily absorbed by the body. Your body does not store these vitamins for long, so any extra will be eliminated in your urine. Because of this, it's important to consume them every day.
A fat-soluble vitamin dissolves in fats and oils and is absorbed with the fats you eat. Your body stores any extra in your liver or fatty tissues. Because of this, you don't need to consume them every day.
No. This test measures the total CoQ10 in your blood and is not used to diagnose inherited (primary) CoQ10 deficiency, which needs specialized testing (sometimes including a muscle sample). If a serious deficiency is suspected, your healthcare provider can guide the right testing.
