The lab tests include a complete blood count (CBC), comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), lipid/cholesterol panel, urinalysis, hemoglobin A1c, insulin, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), apolipoprotein B (ApoB), thyroid markers (TSH, T3, and T4), nutrition markers (ferritin, vitamin D, vitamin B12, and folate), and testosterone. Core health markers:

A CBC measures multiple components of your blood to help identify bleeding disorders or infections and to evaluate abnormal levels of specific blood components, such as low levels of red blood cells, which transport oxygen to body cells and tissues (anemia) and high levels of abnormal white blood cells that crowd out red blood cells and platelets (leukemia).

A CMP (also known as a Chem 14) is a broad screening tool that assesses 14 different substances to evaluate sugar (glucose) levels, kidney function, liver function, and electrolyte imbalance. This panel of tests is often used by healthcare professionals to detect and monitor various abnormalities, including nutrient balance, diabetes, and kidney and liver disease.

A cholesterol panel measures fatty substances used as energy by the body, including cholesterol and triglycerides. Abnormally high levels can build up in the blood and increase your risk for heart disease or stroke. This panel of tests measures total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and triglycerides.

A urinalysis, also called a urine panel, consists of a series of tests used to evaluate visual, chemical, and microscopic features of urine. Urinalysis may be used to identify potential risks for diabetes, liver disease, and kidney disease.

Metabolism & blood sugar processing markers:

The HbA1c test is used to measure your average blood sugar levels over the past 3 months. Healthcare professionals use this test to determine disease states such as prediabetes or type 2 diabetes or to help you monitor your levels if you have diabetes. An elevated HbA1c level means that your blood sugar levels have been high over the past 3 months. The HbA1c test reports your blood sugar levels as a percentage.

Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas that helps control blood sugar levels by transporting glucose and fatty acids to muscle, fat, and liver cells. If the cells do not respond to the insulin, then the glucose stays in the blood and blood sugar levels remain high. This is referred to as insulin resistance, which can lead to prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, obesity, CVD, metabolic syndrome, or other conditions.

Heart & inflammation markers:

C-reactive protein found in the bloodstream increases in response to inflammation, infection, and following a heart attack, surgery, or trauma. The hs-CRP is more sensitive than a CRP test and accurately detects low but persistent levels of inflammation, which may be associated with developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). A persistently low level of inflammation may be a sign of atherosclerosis, the narrowing of blood vessels caused by the buildup of cholesterol and other lipids, which is frequently associated with CVD.

Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) carries LDL cholesterol and other potentially harmful lipid particles around the body. It includes all cholesterol particles that can form plaque in your arteries and lead to cardiovascular disease. Levels of ApoB can indicate a risk of cardiovascular disease, even if traditional LDL cholesterol levels are normal.

Nutrition markers:

The vitamin D test measures the level of vitamin D in your blood to regulate calcium and phosphorus, which are essential nutrients to promote bone and cellular health. An adequate level of this vitamin is necessary for immune function, heart and blood vessel health, insulin regulation, and mood. Abnormal levels of vitamin D can indicate bone disease, nutrition disorders, or other metabolic complications.

Measures the amount of ferritin in the blood, a protein in the blood that contains iron, and helps you understand how much iron your body is storing.

Folate, also known as vitamin B9, is necessary for red and white blood cell development; tissue growth; cell function; the breakdown, usage, and creation of proteins; and the production of DNA. This vitamin is essential during pregnancy to help prevent birth defects and congenital disabilities of the brain (anencephaly) and spine (spina bifida). Folate enables the proper growth of fetal tissues and cells. Folate must be supplied by the diet or through supplementation because the body is not able to produce it independently. Folate is naturally found in beans and peas, citrus fruits, leafy green vegetables, and yeast. Folic acid is the manufactured (synthetic) version of folate, which is found in supplements and fortified foods.

Low levels of folate may occur if people do not consume enough folate or the body does not store or absorb enough of the vitamin. People who are deficient in folate may not have any symptoms or may present with symptoms of anemia (a condition in which your body does not have enough healthy red cells to carry oxygen to your body’s tissues) or nerve damage. Early detection is important to prevent irreversible damage over time, especially to the nervous system.

Vitamin B12 is absorbed in the small intestine and then makes its way to the blood and cells. The body also stores vitamin B12 in the liver for future use. Vitamin B12 is essential in supporting the nervous system, making red blood cells, and creating DNA (the genetic material present in our cells). Vitamin B12 must be supplied by the diet or supplementation because the body is not able to produce it independently. It is naturally found in animal proteins, such as red meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy. Plant foods have no vitamin B12 unless they are fortified.

Low levels of vitamin B12 may occur if you do not consume enough vitamin B12 or the body does not store or absorb enough of the vitamin. People who are deficient in vitamin B12 may or may not have any symptoms of anemia (a condition in which your body does not have enough healthy red cells to carry oxygen to your body's tissues) or nerve damage. Early detection is important to prevent irreversible damage over time, especially to the nervous system.

Hormones & thyroid function markers:

Testosterone is an androgen steroid hormone and the principal male sex hormone, but it is also produced in and important for females. In men, testosterone plays a key role in development of the male reproductive system and promotes secondary sexual characteristics such as facial and chest hair and upper body muscular build. It is primarily secreted from the testes. In women, testosterone is secreted in the ovaries and adrenal glands and helps create estrogen and may help regulate how eggs develop in the ovaries.  

This test measures total testosterone, which represents all biological pools of testosterone, including the free forms, as well as those bound to proteins in the blood. This test will determine whether your total testosterone level is normal, high, or low, based on your sex.

The thyroid function test measures thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in the blood to evaluate thyroid function, which is critical for regulating weight, energy, body temperature, mood, and overall health. If your TSH levels are abnormally high or low, this may indicate that your thyroid is either underactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism). If test results identify abnormal TSH levels, free thyroxine (T4) blood levels will be evaluated using your submitted sample to provide information needed to accurately diagnose hypothyroidism.

T4 (thyroxine) is a thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland and is the main form of thyroid hormone in the blood. Free T4 is not bound to proteins and can enter bodily tissue. Measuring free T4 helps to diagnose hypo- and hyperthyroidism and monitor treatment.

T3 (triiodothyronine) is a thyroid hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Free T3 is not bound to proteins and can enter bodily tissue. Measuring free T3 helps to diagnose and monitor treatment for hyperthyroidism.

At the time of your appointment, physical measurements such as your height, weight, waist size, and blood pressure are taken to provide you with additional health-related information. Chronic health conditions, including heart disease and diabetes, are associated with risk factors such as increased waist circumference and high blood pressure.

The health risk assessment is a brief survey that captures family health history and current health and wellness behaviors.

Your Health Quotient Score is a unique number developed by Quest that represents your health on a scale of 1 to 100. This score is unique to each individual and considers family health history, health and wellness behaviors, body measurements, and select laboratory test results. The higher the score, the lesser the risk may be of developing chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart, liver, or kidney disease. Additionally, you can see how your Health Quotient Score changes by tracking your progress over time.

What does the Comprehensive Metabolic Panel measure?

The Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) includes measurements for blood sugar (glucose), electrolytes and fluid balance (sodium, calcium, potassium, carbon dioxide, chloride), proteins (albumin, total protein), kidney health (blood urea nitrogen, creatinine), and liver health (alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase, bilirubin). The CMP can provide insight into your overall health or to check for medication side effects and medical conditions, including diabetes, liver, and kidney disease.

What does the Complete Blood Count measure?

A Complete Blood Count (CBC) includes measurements for red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelets. Red blood cells (RBCs), also known as erythrocytes, carry oxygen from your lungs to the tissues and organs in your body. Your red blood cell count measures the concentration of RBCs in your blood sample, while hemoglobin indicates the amount of this oxygen-carrying protein inside those RBCs. A hematocrit test measures how much of your blood is made up of red blood cells. A platelet count indicates the concentration of platelets, vital to blood clotting, your blood contains.

A CBC also offers information regarding the physical characteristics of red blood cells. The mean corpuscular volume (MCV) is a measurement used to describe the average size of red blood cells. The mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) value represents the average amount of hemoglobin contained in each red blood cell, whereas the mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) value represents the hemoglobin concentration within red blood cells. The red cell distribution width (RDW) indicates your red blood cells' size variation and similarity.

White blood cells (WBCs), also known as leukocytes, are a component of the immune system which are classified into the following types: lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. They each perform a unique function and work together in response to injury or illness by attacking unknown substances or organisms that enter the body.

How is A1C different from a glucose measurement?

The A1c test measure your average blood glucose levels over the past 3 months from the time of testing, whereas glucose measurements indicate your current blood glucose level at the time of testing.

What is the purpose of urinalysis, and what does it detect?

A urinalysis also called a urine test, identifies abnormalities in the urine's appearance, content, and concentration. This analysis examines the color, clarity, pH, and density of your urine and the presence of glucose, bilirubin, ketones, blood, protein, nitrate, infection, white and red blood cells, skin cells, bacteria, and hyaline casts (microscopic clusters of urinary particles). A urinalysis can determine potential health problems before symptoms develop, including serious diseases like kidney disease, diabetes, or liver disease in their earliest stages.
