About the test

Erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence, is a condition where men experience ongoing difficulty getting or keeping an erection that is firm enough for sexual activity. ED is common and becomes more common with age, but it is not considered a normal part of aging. It is estimated to impact between 30-50 million men in the United States and is often an early warning sign that there is a health problem that needs attention. In many men, ED is associated with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, heart or blood vessel (vascular) disease, kidney or liver disease, or hormone imbalance, as well as psychological factors such as stress and anxiety. Once identified, these factors can often be treated, improving ED symptoms.

This panel measures blood and urine markers related to several of these underlying conditions that have been linked to ED–including cardiometabolic health, kidney and liver function, cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and key reproductive and thyroid hormones. Many of these markers are impacted by modifiable factors that can be managed through diet, medication, or lifestyle changes. Measuring the levels of these hormones and health markers can give insights to patients and support a more informed conversation with their healthcare provider about why they may be experiencing erectile dysfunction, and next steps.

This ED blood test measures levels of hormones (testosterone, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH)) and health markers (complete blood count (CBC), comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), cholesterol/lipid panel, and hemoglobin A1c). These markers do not measure erectile function directly, but help identify health conditions known to contribute to ED. A urinalysis is also included.

Testosterone is an androgen steroid hormone and the principal male sex hormone, but it is also produced in and important for females. In men, testosterone plays a key role in development of the male reproductive system and promotes secondary sexual characteristics such as facial and chest hair and upper body muscular build. It is primarily secreted from the testes. This test measures total testosterone, which represents all biological pools of testosterone, including the free forms, as well as those bound to proteins in the blood. This test will determine whether your total testosterone level is normal, high, or low, based on your sex.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in the blood are measured to evaluate thyroid function, which is critical for regulating weight, energy, body temperature, mood, and overall health. If your TSH levels are abnormally high or low, this may indicate that your thyroid is either underactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism). If test results identify abnormal TSH levels, free thyroxine (T4) blood levels will be evaluated using your submitted sample to provide information needed to accurately diagnose hypothyroidism.

FSH is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates sperm production. It helps regulate the quantity and health of sperm produced by the testes.

Luteinizing hormone is another sex hormone produced by the pituitary gland that helps with the production of sperm by signaling the testes to make testosterone. It helps with sperm production and influences a man’s sex drive and overall sexual health.

A CBC measures multiple components of your blood to help identify bleeding disorders or infections and to evaluate abnormal levels of specific blood components, such as low levels of red blood cells, which transport oxygen to body cells and tissues (anemia) and high levels of abnormal white blood cells that crowd out red blood cells and platelets (leukemia).

A CMP (also known as a Chem 14) is a broad screening tool that assesses 14 different substances to evaluate sugar (glucose) levels, kidney function, liver function, and electrolyte imbalance. This panel of tests is often used by healthcare professionals to detect and monitor various abnormalities, including nutrient balance, diabetes, and kidney and liver disease.

A cholesterol panel measures fatty substances used as energy by the body, including cholesterol and triglycerides. Abnormally high levels can build up in the blood and increase your risk for heart disease or stroke. This panel of tests measures total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and triglycerides.

The HbA1c test is used to measure your average blood sugar levels over the past 3 months. Healthcare professionals use this test to determine disease states such as prediabetes or type 2 diabetes or to help you monitor your levels if you have diabetes. An elevated HbA1c level means that your blood sugar levels have been high over the past 3 months. The HbA1c test reports your blood sugar levels as a percentage.

A urinalysis, also called a urine panel, consists of a series of tests used to evaluate the visual, chemical, and microscopic features of urine. It can help identify signs of kidney or urinary tract conditions, including markers associated with infection, inflammation, or abnormal substances in the urine. Urinalysis may also be used as part of the evaluation for conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, and liver disease.

Erectile dysfunction is usually a sign of a deeper medical problem. Signs and symptoms of erectile dysfunction may include the following:

Having trouble getting an erection
Having trouble keeping an erection, especially during sexual intercourse
Lower sex drive

Who can be affected by erectile dysfunction?

You are more likely to be at risk for ED if you:

Have medical condition such as diabetes or depression

What causes erectile dysfunction?

There are numerous causes of ED, usually related to conditions that cause your circulatory, nervous, or endocrine systems to function improperly and affect your body’s ability to deliver blood to the penis. There are also medications, substances, or psychological/emotional conditions that can cause ED.

Is there a cure for erectile dysfunction?

ED is not likely to go away on its own. Changes to physical and mental lifestyle or treatment of underlying condition(s) are the best way to fix ED.
