About the Test

The quantitative pregnancy test measures hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) levels in your blood to help provide pregnancy results as early as seven days after conception. The hCG hormone is produced by the developing placenta (within the uterus) and steadily increases throughout the first trimester (8-10 weeks) of a normal pregnancy.

This test is highly accurate and indicates whether or not your hCG levels reach the detectable limit of more than 5 mlU/mL. While considered more accurate and reliable than urine (at-home) tests, due to a number of factors, false results (both positive and negative) are possible outcomes from a pregnancy blood test. This test can measure hCG in your blood as early as 7 days after conception. This test is a quantitative test and your test results will be reported as high or normal depending on the amount of hCG detected.

This test is accurate, but as with urine/home pregnancy tests, false results (both negative and positive) are possible outcomes. A false-negative result may occur when the hCG level is lower than 5 mIU/mL, but you are pregnant. A common cause of a false-negative result is performing the test too early after conception, which results in not enough hCG in the blood to detect a pregnancy. If you suspect you are pregnant and have received a negative result, the test should be repeated in a few days. A false-positive result may occur when the hCG level is higher than 5 mIU/mL, but you are not pregnant. False positives rarely happen, but this may occur if you are taking medications containing hCG or due to certain medical conditions.

What is the difference between a qualitative and quantitative hCG test?

A qualitative hCG test determines whether the hCG hormone is present. A quantitative hCG test determines the amount of hCG present which can indicate how far along a person is in the pregnancy.

This test is a quantitative hCG test that measures the amount of hCG in your bloodstream. If your hCG reaches the detectable limit of more than 5 mlU/mL you are very likely pregnant. However, the results should be confirmed with your healthcare provider. If the test result is less than 5 mlU/mL, either you are not pregnant, or the test may have been conducted too early and requires repeating after a few more days.

Will I receive a numeric value in my results?

Yes. A quantitative test (such as this one) provides you a numerical value, not just instead of a simple “yes or no” answer.
