About the test

This aluminum test evaluates your blood for significant aluminum exposure. Aluminum is the most abundant metal in the earth’s crust, so it is not uncommon or harmful to have a low level of aluminum in the body from the surrounding environment (food, air, water, soil, etc.). Food, drinks, antacids, and antiperspirants may contain aluminum, which can also increase exposure. Most extra aluminum is removed from the body via the kidneys.

If aluminum builds up in the body, it can become toxic and negatively affect your health and organs, potentially causing anemia, lung problems, or bone and brain disease. It can also affect how your digestive system works and can cause your iron and calcium absorption to decrease. Higher levels of aluminum most commonly occur in people with impaired kidney function, or those receiving long-term intravenous nutrition, however it can also impact individuals with significant occupational or environmental exposure.

This test may be right for you if any of the following are true:

You are curious about the level of aluminum in your blood
You regularly take certain medications that contain aluminum (ie, antacids)
You have chronic kidney disease, are undergoing dialysis, or are receiving long-term intravenous nutrition treatment
You work or live in an area where there are high levels of aluminum in the environment, such as aluminum mining plants, aluminum processing plants, welding sites, or hazardous waste sites

This test measures the level of aluminum in your blood to monitor exposure. Aluminum is the most abundant metal on earth but does not occur naturally in your body. Small amounts are not concerning; however, elevated levels may indicate excessive exposure or poor elimination. These results should be interpreted in the context of medical history, exposure history, and symptoms and should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

No special preparation is required.

After you provide your specimen, it generally takes a few business days to process and release your test results. However, processing times may vary. Your test results will be available in a clear and easy-to-read report. If you have or create a MyQuest® account, you may be able to review your new results there with your other Quest results. If your results differ from expected ranges, you may receive an alert call from an independent healthcare coordinator. Independent healthcare providers are available to discuss questions or concerns you may have regarding your results.

FAQs

What is aluminum?

Aluminum may be found in food, drinks, certain medications (ie, antacids and buffered aspirin), antiperspirants, pots, pans, and construction materials. While small amounts of exposure are common and generally not harmful, higher levels may occur with occupational exposure, prolonged medical use, or impaired kidney function.

What does an elevated aluminum result mean?

Elevated aluminum levels may suggest increased or ongoing exposure or reduced ability to eliminate aluminum from the body. Abnormal results should be interpreted alongside medical history, kidney function, medications regularly consumed, and potential exposure sources. An elevated result does not by itself diagnose aluminum toxicity. If your results are abnormal, you may receive an alert call from an independent healthcare coordinator and, included with your purchase, you have the ability to discuss your results with a healthcare provider at no extra cost. Follow up evaluation with your regular healthcare provider may be recommended.

Does Quest offer a test that includes other environmental exposures that are commonly evaluated?

Signs and symptoms of different metal poisoning can mimic each other, so they are often tested together, such as lead and copper. If you are interested in having these other heavy metals tested, the Lead Test, Copper Test, and two heavy metal panels (Heavy Metals Test Panel — Basic and Heavy Metals Test Panel — Expanded) are available. If you are concerned about broader toxic metal exposure, you can purchase this test in combination with either of the heavy metal panels or other individual metal tests and have your lab work done in a single visit.
