According to federal law, major food allergen ingredients must be plainly stated on the labels of packaged foods and dietary supplements in the United States. Also, the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) identifies nine foods or food groups as the major food allergens: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, sesame, and soybeans.
Although avoidance is the best way to prevent a reaction, consumers can find these allergens in unsuspected places, such as soaps, creams, massage oils, and other products. Be sure to read labels and research the products you use carefully.
IgE allergy blood tests measure immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in your blood that are associated with true allergic reactions. These reactions occur when the immune system overreacts to a specific allergen (eg, pollen, pet dander, peanuts, or shellfish) and can cause symptoms like hives, itching, swelling, congestion, or even severe reactions. IgE testing is widely used by healthcare providers to help identify immediate-type allergies and guide diagnosis and treatment.
IgG sensitivity tests measure immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies to specific substances. The presence of IgG antibodies typically reflects prior exposure and a normal immune response rather than an allergic reaction. Many medical organizations do not consider IgG testing a reliable method for diagnosing allergies or clinical sensitivities.
For this reason, Quest offers IgE blood tests on allergy panels. These are the clinically accepted methods for evaluating allergic reactions to specific allergens. If you’re experiencing symptoms that may be related to allergies, IgE testing can help identify potential triggers, so you and your healthcare provider can determine appropriate next steps.
Quest has worked with independent physicians to define appropriate age eligibility ranges for each test. These ranges ensure that our offerings are medically responsible and suitable for self-directed use. We plan to review age eligibility for our tests over time as more data and guidance becomes available.
Quest offers allergy testing for individuals 18 years and older, including the Indoor Respiratory Allergy Panel and the Food Allergy Panel with Reflex to Components.
Tests purchased on questhealth.com are intended for individuals paying directly—we do not bill insurance, and purchases cannot be submitted for insurance reimbursement.
