This Student Athlete Test Panel contains markers within many key areas important to fitness and performance.

A complete blood count (CBC) measures several important components of your blood and can provide insight into your overall health. It may help identify signs of conditions such as anemia, infection, inflammation, immune system disorders, or certain blood-related conditions. The test evaluates red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body; white blood cells, which help fight infection; and platelets, which support normal blood clotting. A CBC also measures hemoglobin, hematocrit, and additional markers that can help your healthcare provider better understand your blood cell health and function.

A CMP (also known as a Chem 14) is a broad screening tool that assesses 14 different substances to evaluate sugar (glucose) levels, kidney function, liver function, and electrolyte imbalance. This panel of tests is often used by healthcare professionals to detect and monitor various abnormalities, including nutrient balance, diabetes, and kidney and liver disease.

The following markers are tested to assess different aspects of iron metabolism in your body:

Iron: Measures the amount of iron in your blood. Iron is an essential mineral needed for proper growth and development in the body. Iron is needed by red blood cells to transport oxygen throughout the body. A low iron level can point to anemia, which may be caused by diet, injury or blood loss, pregnancy, heavy exercise, and certain conditions.
Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC): Measures how well your blood attaches itself to iron to move it around your body.
Ferritin: Measures the amount of ferritin in the blood, a protein in the blood that contains iron and helps you understand how much iron your body is storing.

A cholesterol panel measures fatty substances used as energy by the body, including cholesterol and triglycerides. Abnormally high levels can build up in the blood and increase your risk for heart disease or stroke. This panel of tests measures total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and triglycerides.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in the blood are measured to evaluate thyroid function, which is critical for regulating weight, energy, body temperature, mood, and overall health. If your TSH levels are abnormally high or low, this may indicate that your thyroid is either underactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism). If test results identify abnormal TSH levels, free thyroxine (T4) blood levels will be evaluated using your submitted sample to provide information needed to accurately diagnose hypothyroidism.

Vitamin B9 (folate) is a water-soluble vitamin that helps your body make red and white blood cells; grow tissues; build DNA; and turn food into energy. This test reflects recent dietary intake and is affected by recent meals. This vitamin is important during pregnancy to help prevent congenital disabilities (conditions present at birth) of the brain (eg, anencephaly) and spine (eg, spina bifida). Folate helps with the healthy development of fetal tissues and cells. Folate deficiency is very rare in the US today. People who are deficient in folate may not have any symptoms or may have symptoms of anemia, an irregular heartbeat, weakness, tiredness, or nerve damage. Early detection is important to prevent irreversible damage over time, especially to the nervous system.

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is a water-soluble vitamin that helps your body make red blood cells, create DNA, and keep your nervous system healthy. People who are deficient in cobalamin may not have any symptoms or may have symptoms of anemia, depression, weakness, tiredness, memory loss, or nerve damage. Early detection is important to prevent irreversible damage over time, especially to the nervous system.

This test measures the amount of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the most reliable indicator for the overall level of vitamin D in your body. Vitamin D is an essential fat-soluble vitamin that is necessary for the proper functioning of your heart and blood vessel health, insulin regulation, and mood. Vitamin D helps regulate calcium and phosphorus, which are essential nutrients for strong bones and healthy cells. It can also help the immune system fight infections and is known to be involved in muscle function and protein production.

Your body produces vitamin D after exposure to sunlight or from consuming certain foods and supplements. It then stores an inactive form of vitamin D in fat cells until it's needed. Your liver changes the inactive form of vitamin D into the storage and transport form of vitamin D called 25-hydroxyvitamin D. The kidneys then change 25-hydroxyvitamin D to the active form that your body uses. When levels are low, your body may not have enough to support the functions that depend on it.

Low levels of vitamin D can lead to bone pain, muscle weakness, or depression. Abnormal levels of vitamin D can indicate bone disease, nutrition disorders, or other metabolic complications. Vitamin D is naturally found in foods such as meat, seafood (trout and salmon), cod liver oil, or fortified dairy and plant-based milk products. It can also be found in supplement form.

Why is this test only available for athletes 10 – 25 years of age?

Quest has worked with independent physicians to define appropriate age eligibility ranges for each test. These ranges ensure that our offerings are medically responsible and suitable for self-directed use. We plan to review age eligibility for our tests over time as more data and guidance becomes available. This test’s age range has been expanded beyond the childhood (under 17) category to accommodate the overlap with college-age student-athletes. This allows college-aged individuals to choose either this test or one of our other fitness profile tests, which are available for ages 18+.

Are symptoms required to take this test?

No. This panel can be used as part of routine wellness screenings, a pre-season health check, or to establish a performance and health baseline — with or without specific symptoms. Many factors that can affect energy, recovery, and performance, including low vitamin D, iron deficiency, and thyroid imbalances, may not produce obvious symptoms in early stages. Having baseline results on file also makes it easier to identify changes over time and supports more informed conversations with a healthcare provider.

I am preparing to compete in NCAA or other highly competitive athletics — how can this panel help, and do I need sickle cell testing?

It may help. This panel can provide information to support the building of a strong health and performance foundation ahead of competitive participation. It covers the key blood-based markers most relevant to athletic readiness — including general health, metabolic function, iron status, thyroid function, cholesterol, and vitamin levels that directly influence energy, endurance, and recovery. Establishing a baseline before a competitive season gives you and your healthcare provider meaningful data to work with and may help identify any underlying factors worth addressing before training intensity increases.

For athletes entering some NCAA divisions and some other competitive leagues, sickle cell trait testing is a separate requirement. The NCAA requires all first-year and transfer student-athletes to confirm their sickle cell trait status before participation — and as of August 2022, waivers are no longer accepted as an alternative.⁷ Quest Diagnostics is an NCAA-approved provider for sickle cell testing. A sickle cell trait test is available as an add-on to this panel, allowing you to address both your broader health baseline and your NCAA clearance requirement in a single visit. If you are unsure whether your previous newborn screening results meet your institution’s requirements, a new test is the most straightforward way to confirm your status.

Fasting for 8–12 hours before sample collection is required to ensure accurate results, particularly for glucose and metabolic markers included in this panel. You or your child may drink water during this time. We recommend scheduling a morning appointment to make fasting easier.

What happens if results are abnormal?

If results fall outside expected ranges, you may receive an alert from an independent healthcare coordinator. Independent healthcare providers are available to discuss results and answer any questions. We recommend reviewing any abnormal results with your or your child’s healthcare provider to ensure appropriate follow-up and care.

What is reflex testing and what does it mean for test results?

If a TSH result is abnormal, the lab will automatically run a T4 test on the same sample already provided – at no additional cost. This additional result helps provide more complete information for a healthcare provider to work with when evaluating thyroid function. You do not need to schedule a separate appointment or provide an additional sample.

It is a strong starting point for student athletes and active young adults, while the Fitness Profile panels are better suited for adults looking for a more advanced or specialized performance assessment. For athletes ages 18–25 who want a broader or more advanced view, the Fitness Profile panels may be worth exploring after or instead of this panel.
