About the Test

Quest offers the InSure® ONE™ FIT home collection kit, which detects if there is any hidden blood in your stool. The presence of blood may be a sign of lower gastrointestinal disorders, like colon cancer, that should be treated. Colorectal diseases, such as polyps and colitis, may leak small amounts of blood into the intestine. The sample is collected at home and shipped back to a Quest Diagnostics laboratory for testing and resulting.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that adults aged 45 to 75 be screened annually for colorectal cancer.¹

This test may be helpful if you’ve had:

No symptoms of colorectal cancer
Your last colorectal cancer screening over a year ago
A negative colonoscopy over 10 years ago

This test may not be helpful if you have:

Any symptoms of colorectal cancer
Personal or family history of colorectal cancer, inherited cancer syndromes, or other digestive tract cancers
Personal history of colorectal conditions such as Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn disease, or diverticulosis flare-up or colorectal ulcers in the past month
Had major bowel or rectal surgery, such as colectomy or colostomy

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that adults aged 45 to 75 be screened annually for colorectal cancer.¹

This test detects human hemoglobin (a protein found in red blood cells) in your stool sample. Trace amounts of blood are detected using hemoglobin-specific antibodies, which may otherwise go unnoticed. These antibodies are specific to human hemoglobin and do not react with animal hemoglobin found in foods such as red meat.

A microscopic amount of blood in the stool can be an early sign of gastrointestinal disorders, like colon cancer. Blood in your feces may indicate lower gastrointestinal bleeding associated with conditions such as hemorrhoids, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, polyps, colorectal lesions, or cancer. A colon polyp is an abnormal clump of cells that forms on the colon's lining and is associated with an increased risk of colon cancer. While many colon polyps are harmless, some polyps, if not removed, could develop into colon cancer. Screening enables the early detection of colorectal cancer, and routine screening may aid in preventing colorectal cancer.

This screening tool cannot determine the specific cause or source of bleeding. It is the first step in the screening process and does not diagnose gastrointestinal conditions or colorectal cancer. A positive result may not mean that you have colon cancer—it simply means you need to share the results with your healthcare provider to discuss next steps, which may include a colonoscopy.

This test is appropriate for gastrointestinal disorders screening in adults without symptoms of colon cancer. It is not recommended for individuals with symptoms. If you experience the following signs or symptoms, contact a healthcare provider immediately.

Persistent abdominal pain or bloating
Rectal bleeding
Bloody stools
Weakness and fatigue
Unintentional weight loss
Changes in bowel habits lasting for more than a few days (diarrhea, constipation, thin stools)
Constant feeling of needing to have a bowel movement that is not alleviated by having one

After your Colorectal Screening (FIT) specimen is received, it may take up to 14 business days to process and release your test results. However, processing times may vary. Your test results will be available in a clear and easy-to-read report. If your results differ from expected ranges, you may receive an alert call from an independent healthcare coordinator. Independent physicians are available to discuss questions or concerns you may have regarding your results.

Can I perform this test during menstruation?

No, it is not recommended to use this test during menstruation, as active uterine bleeding may provide a false-positive result.

What do the results mean?

A negative result indicates that blood was not detected in your sample collection. A positive result indicates that blood was detected in your sample collection, which may indicate lower gastrointestinal bleeding associated with conditions such as hemorrhoids, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, polyps, colorectal cancer, or other gastrointestinal lesions that can bleed.

Do I have to handle my stool?

The Colorectal Screening (FIT) Test is performed using toilet water collected from a single bowel movement. There is no stool collection or handling required.

How do I collect a sample with my home collection kit?
