As a parent, this test may be right for your children or teens (ages 10-17) who:

Have not had routine blood work done recently and you would like to establish or reestablish a health baseline to support ongoing pediatric care

This expanded wellness panel contains markers related to general health, heart health, and thyroid function.

A complete blood count (CBC) measures several important components of your blood and can provide insight into your overall health. It may help identify signs of conditions such as anemia, infection, inflammation, immune system disorders, or certain blood-related conditions. The test evaluates red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body; white blood cells, which help fight infection; and platelets, which support normal blood clotting. A CBC also measures hemoglobin, hematocrit, and additional markers that can help your healthcare provider better understand your blood cell health and function.

A CMP (also known as a Chem 14) is a broad screening tool that assesses 14 different substances to evaluate sugar (glucose) levels, kidney function, liver function, and electrolyte imbalance. This panel of tests is often used by healthcare professionals to detect and monitor various abnormalities, including nutrient balance, diabetes, and kidney and liver disease.

The following markers are tested to assess different aspects of iron metabolism in your body:

Iron: Measures the amount of iron in your blood. Iron is an essential mineral needed for proper growth and development in the body. Iron is needed by red blood cells to transport oxygen throughout the body. A low iron level can point to anemia, which may be caused by diet, injury or blood loss, pregnancy, heavy exercise, and certain conditions.
Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC): Measures how well your blood attaches itself to iron to move it around your body.
Ferritin: Measures the amount of ferritin in the blood, a protein in the blood that contains iron and helps you understand how much iron your body is storing.

A cholesterol panel measures fatty substances used as energy by the body, including cholesterol and triglycerides. Abnormally high levels can build up in the blood and increase your risk for heart disease or stroke. This panel of tests measures total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and triglycerides.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in the blood are measured to evaluate thyroid function, which is critical for regulating weight, energy, body temperature, mood, and overall health. If your TSH levels are abnormally high or low, this may indicate that your thyroid is either underactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism). If test results identify abnormal TSH levels, free thyroxine (T4) blood levels will be evaluated using your submitted sample to provide information needed to accurately diagnose hypothyroidism.

Fasting (not eating or drinking anything except water) for 8-12 hours is required. Certain supplements and medications can interfere with your test results. If you are concerned about any of your supplements or medications impacting your results, talk to your healthcare provider before your sample is collected to see if you should stop taking them and for how long.

Results are typically available within 1-2 business days of providing your sample - this includes sample processing, testing, and a clinical review before release.

You, as the registered parent, will receive a secure link to your email when results are ready. They will be available in a clear, easy-to-read report. If you have, or create, a MyQuest® account, results will also be available there - and for larger panel tests, you may be able to see individual results as each becomes available.

You may receive an alert call from an independent healthcare coordinator if some of your test results are outside of the expected ranges. Included with your purchase, you have the ability to talk to an independent healthcare provider who can walk you through test results, address any questions or concerns you have, and help you think through next steps.

If your thyroid (TSH) lab result is abnormal or out of expected range, the lab will perform an additional test (free thyroxine, T4) on the sample you have already provided at no extra cost to you. This additional testing can provide additional diagnostic information to help with care.

Quest has worked with independent physicians to define appropriate age eligibility ranges for each test. These ranges ensure that our offerings are medically responsible and suitable for self-directed use. We plan to review age eligibility for our tests over time as more data and guidance becomes available.

Why would a child need blood testing?

Blood testing can help evaluate general health, nutritional status, and common conditions such as iron deficiency, thyroid imbalance, or cholesterol abnormalities.

Does my child need symptoms to take this test?

No. Families may use this panel as part of routine wellness screenings or baseline health evaluations. Many common conditions including iron deficiency, metabolic concerns, high cholesterol, and thyroid dysfunction may not produce obvious symptoms in early stages, so having baseline results on file can make it easier for healthcare providers to identify changes over time and can support more informed conversations at wellness visits.

Why does my child need to fast before the test?

Fasting for 8–12 hours before sample collection is required to ensure accurate results, particularly for glucose and metabolic markers included in this panel. Your child may drink water during this time. We recommend scheduling a morning appointment to make fasting easier for younger patients.

Why is iron testing important for children and teens?

Iron is essential for growth, development, and energy in children and teens. Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in this age group and can affect energy levels, concentration, and overall wellbeing. Children who are going through growth spurts, follow a vegetarian or plant-based diet, are picky eaters, or experience heavy periods may be at higher risk and can benefit from regular monitoring.

What are common signs of iron deficiency in children?

Signs of iron deficiency can include fatigue, weakness, pale skin, irritability, poor appetite, and difficulty concentrating. In some cases, children may develop cravings for non-food items such as ice or dirt. However, iron deficiency does not always produce obvious symptoms, which is one reason routine screening can be valuable. Why might thyroid testing be relevant for children?

Thyroid testing may be worth considering if your child has a family history of thyroid disease, or if they are showing symptoms that can be associated with thyroid dysfunction. These can include unexplained weight changes, persistent fatigue, mood changes, irregular growth patterns, sensitivity to cold or heat, or changes in heart rate. Because these symptoms can overlap with other conditions, testing alongside broader health markers – as included in this panel – can help provide useful context for a healthcare provider.

Why is cholesterol screening recommended during adolescence?

Cholesterol levels established during childhood and adolescence can persist into adulthood and higher levels during adolescence can contribute to long-term cardiovascular risk. Current guidelines recommend universal cholesterol screening between the ages of 9 and 11, and again between 17 and 21.⁴ Early screening can identify elevated levels before they become a concern, particularly in children with a family history of high cholesterol or early heart disease. Is this test appropriate during puberty?

Yes. This panel is designed for ages 10–17, including children undergoing puberty when nutritional and metabolic needs may change.

What happens if my child’s results are abnormal?

If results fall outside expected ranges, you may receive an alert from an independent healthcare coordinator. Independent healthcare providers are available to discuss your child’s results and answer any questions. We recommend reviewing any abnormal results with your child’s pediatrician or healthcare provider to ensure appropriate follow-up and care.

What is reflex testing and what does it mean for my child’s results?

If your child’s TSH result is abnormal, the lab will automatically run a T4 test on the same sample already provided – at no additional cost. This additional result helps provide more complete information for a healthcare provider to work with when evaluating thyroid function. You do not need to schedule a separate appointment or provide an additional sample.

How is this panel different from the Youth Wellness Test Panel — Core?

This panel includes everything in the Core panel – a CBC, CMP, and iron panel — and adds a cholesterol panel and thyroid function testing. These two additions cover screenings that are specifically relevant during adolescence and provide a broader view of heart health and thyroid function alongside the general health, metabolic, and iron status markers in Core. If you are looking for a starting point without the cholesterol and thyroid components, consider the Core panel.
